Convict Leasing Memorial @ Tennessee State Penitentiary
Convict Leasing Memorial @ Tennessee State Penitentiary

2023

A local print shop commissioned a façade mural, and research revealed the site was once Tennessee’s first state penitentiary, historically tied to convict leasing, a system that forced incarcerated Black Tennesseans into unpaid labor after the abolition of slavery. We enlisted Meg “Pie” Pollard to design a memorial honoring the victims of this system. The mural reveal brought the community together, preserving history and sparking dialogue, while increasing foot traffic to the site and transforming the print shop from a struggling business into a trusted community partner and cultural supporter.
